American Electric Power (AEP) and Southern Company both withdrew from the project to build a commercial scale plant that would demonstrate a host of emerging technologies to produce electricity from coal while limiting greenhouse gas emissions. AEP cited concerns about the project’s cost and scope. Southern will focus on other carbon capture projects.
The development came less than two weeks after US Energy Secretary Steven Chu revived the project, which would employ coal gasification, carbon capture and storage and hydrogen production.
