Speaking in unusually apocalyptic tones, Ban referred to Copenhagen as a once-in-a-generation opportunity for rich and poor nations to come together and negotiate a climate-change strategy. If the chance is missed in Copenhagen, it is unclear that another similar opportunity for such co-operation will come along in time.
“The world has less than 10 years to halt the global rise in greenhouse gas emissions if we are to avoid catastrophic consequences for people and the planet,” he says.
