Schwarzenegger’s plea to Obama, who spent his first full day in office as President on 21 January, came after California’s top air quality regulator urged the administration to reconsider a request that would allow the state to set its own limits on emissions from vehicles.
The former George W Bush administration's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had turned down a previous waiver request to impose a 30% reduction in emissions by 2016.
