The distiller posted a net loss of $54.9 million in the third quarter. That compared to the $4.8 million loss it wrote down in the same period a year ago.

Specifically, Pacific Ethanol blamed the quarterly decline on volatile corn prices.

"We saw unprecedented volatility in the corn and ethanol markets during the quarter and are disappointed with the resulting impact on margins,” Neil Koehler, the company's chief executive said.
