In a 44-hour operation in the choppy waters of the German Bight, a team headed by Danish developer Dong Energy installed a new model of turbine foundation known as a suction bucket jacket (SBJ) that it hopes will be key to slashing the cost of energy (CoE) from offshore wind farms down to below €125 ($162) per MWh.
Until now, giant tree-stump-like steel monopiles have generally been driven into the seabed to anchor the thousands of offshore machines erected around the world.
