According to its developers, the University of Maine-ledDeepCwind consortium, VolturnUS yesterday became the first offshore turbine todeliver power to a grid in the US – or anywhere else in the Americas.

The 1:8-scale model has been installed in 24-metres of water off Maine to gather data to de-risk theconcept, with a view to building a $96m deepwater pilot farm made up of a pairof 6MW models by 2016.

The VolturnUS, which has beenin development at the university’s Advanced Structures & Composites Centrefor the last five years, is based on a concrete and composite semi-submersibleplatform mated to a turbine with a 129-metre-diameter rotor.
