A primer on cable burial risk-management has been published by the Carbon Trust to answer some of the “significant cost overruns and schedule delays” seen during construction of Britain’s first wave of offshore wind farms, 80% of which reported cable-laying problems that undercut project economics.
“The Cable Burial Risk Assessment [CBRA] is a tool to evaluate the real external threat to cables based on actual site conditions,” states Carbon Trust project manager Dimitris Kostopoulos, “and provides developers with the possibility of assessing the cable protection level once the operation is performed and over time by updating site survey data in real time.
