First power is flowing from the lead-off phase of the landmark MeyGen tidal energy project in the Pentland Firth off Scotland.

The flagship 1.5MW turbine, supplied by Andritz Hydro Hammerfest, has been plugged into the grid-connected export line at the Inner Sound site, which is planned to be built-out into a near-400MW plant in the coming years.

"This is the moment we have been working towards since we first identified the MeyGen site back in 2007," says Tim Cornelius, chief executive of MeyGen developer Atlantis Resources, "and I am immensely proud of and grateful for our suppliers, our funders, our supportive shareholders, and of course the project team, whose commitment, tenacity and belief have been without equal.
