The National Grid revealed that 40.5GWh out of a total 809.5GWh was provided by wind.

At its peak, wind generated 1.86GW, with the bulk of the power coming from Scotland.

A National Grid spokesman said when "embedded" energy from turbines not connected to the grid was taken into consideration, wind probably accounted for about 10% of the UK's electricity.

The spokesman described the landmark as "the passing of a milestone in UK wind generation".
