Wind turbines, sad to say, may not be a whale's best friend.. Scientists at Scotland's University of St Andrews have confirmed that naval sonar sounds scare beaked whales and are one reason the timid creatures often become beached. Noise from oil rigs, ships and, yes, even offshore wind farms can also do the trick.

"But, maybe even more importantly," says Ian Boyd, the project's chief scientist, "we have discovered that beaked whales are scared by virtually anything unusual.".
