MECHELEN: The pioneering spirit at work in Belgium's €610m ($850m) Belwind 1 wind farm -the world's farthest-offshore power development - can equally be seen in the design of its electrical export hub, a forward-looking hybrid high-voltage substation. The 200-megavolt-ampere o ffshore WindSub from CG Global, a 1,150-tonne monopile installation, was built with reliability as its watchword. With offshore repairs costing ten times as much as they do onshore, the main focus of its "substation solution" was to relocate as much componentry into a land-based facility, where access maintenance would be a fraction of the cost.
