"What we are showing the Coast Guard is what is possible, in terms of meeting some component of their current energy bills with power from the tidal currents," says Ferland. If ORPC has its way, what is possible is almost limitless, given the vast tidal energy coursing along the country's northeast Atlantic Seaboard. Sauer might even one day succeed in rebranding the US' easternmost city - as the weather-worn sign outside Eastport reads - as America's "tidal-energy centre".
Tidal power heads for the Maine line
In low season, Eastport, Maine - a picturesque New England waterfront town where sardine canneries have long given way to antique shops and folksy art galleries - is largely shuttered and sleepy. Just up the hill from the fishing boats and pleasure craft bobbing in the marina, however, the atmosphere in the offices of the Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) could hardly be more electric.
