Like many developing countries, investment opportunities abound; whether investors are willing to take the risk while Ortega is in office is another question. As Costa sees it, Nicaragua "is not the best place to invest in, but it's not that bad, either".
President blamed for scaring off investors
When Daniel Ortega took office in 2007 - his second stint as president after being in power from 1985-1990 - foreign investors fled the country, fearful that his leftist Sandinista politics and closeness to President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela would sweep the nation into a frenzy of anti-capitalist activity. Indeed, Ortega has received aid from Ch á vez, using it to fight poverty as well as to support his own politics and business interests.
