The future of North American renewable energy may well rest in a 16,000-acre (6,474-hectare) expanse of fallow farmland outside the town of Clovis, New Mexico. Ambitious plans are taking shape to build a 5GW "superstation" here to tie together the US's patchwork of electricity transmission systems into one national grid. At a stroke, it would create an energy market hub, making it possible for future wind, solar and geothermal power production to flow freely across regional network borders.
