For one, the towers — built of concrete rings post-tensioned with a network of internal tendons — were fabricated at a mobile on-site factory, an easier proposition than transporting giant steel units to the remote location in Santa Catarina.

Yet, perhaps more importantly, the 129MW project also went some way to proving that concrete towers could be more economic than steel when reaching into the so-called Ekman layer more than 100 metres high, where the winds are significantly stronger.
