The much-maligned electricity pylon is due for a makeover, and the Royal Institute of British Architects is running a competition to design a new generation of the 50-metre-high steel lattice towers that carry up to 400kV.
Pylons have barely changed since the 1920s, but many more will be needed to carry renewable energy to consumers. New technologies and materials mean they could look different.
