The Brazilian Senate has approved the creation of a national renewable-energy agency - called Aner - that would be responsible for devising regulations for wind, solar and biomass projects.

The move by the Senate's infrastructure services commission authorises the President to create Aner. The law now goes to the Commission of the Constitution, Justice and Citizenship for a final decision. The objective is to co-ordinate the process to move towards renewable energies, and to investigate public policies necessary to boost the energy supply in a sustainable way.
