Basin Electric has brought the 162MW Crow Lake project into commercial operation in South Dakota, which it says is the largest wind farm owned solely by an electricity co-operative in the US. The $363m facility consists of 108 GE 1.5MW turbines, with 100 owned by Basin electric subsidiary PrairieWinds SD 1. The 135-member cooperative sold one turbine to the Mitchell Technical Institute in the city of Mitchell for training student wind technicians, and the remaining seven are owned by a group of local community investors.
