The Southern Methodist University Geothermal Laboratory in Dallas discovered unexpectedly high temperatures beneath West Virginia that give it the highest grade geothermal resource among states east of the Mississippi River.
The discovery was made as part of SMU’s project to update its 2004 Geothermal Map of North America, which featured only four temperature points informing geothermal estimates for West Virginia. The updated version has 1,455 points.
