Iceland says it has the most ideal conditions for hosting costly data centres: cheap power and cool northern climes. These two factors alone would help cut the bills for cooling the centres, say supporters of the data-storage investment. "We could do smaller geothermal power plants that are capable of generating 50 megawatts [MW] for net servers," says director-general Gudni Johannesson of Iceland's National Energy Authority.
Cool climate offers warm options
In a move that could diversify its economy after the collapse of its high-flying banking sector, Iceland hopes to lure companies such as Yahoo, Microsoft and Google into locating offshore data centres on the island.
