Europe’s geothermal industry is calling for the EU to put the brakes on land-based carbon dioxide (CO2) storage, arguing that the same aquifers that would be used to store the gas could potentially be tapped to produce geothermal energy.
The European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) says that before countries ratify the EU’s directive on the geological storage of CO2, they should fully map the subsurface to ensure the projects do not interfere with the development of experimental technologies to tap geothermal energy 4km–5km below the Earth’s crust.
