Power generation from the plant near the town of Rovigo will begin in the second half of 2010, with final completion of the facility expected by year end.
SunEdison, a division of MEMC Electronic Materials, will jointly develop the project with financing partner Banco Santander. Additional financial partners are expected to join the project for final ownership.
The company says the 72MW plant will take over as the largest in Europe from a 60MW solar farm in Olmedilla, Spain, and a 50MW facility in Strasskirchen, Germany.
