Construction at the 3.3 sq km site between the Island of Stroma and the mainland of Caithness, said to be the ‘crown jewel’ of the high tidal velocity Pentland Firth, is planned as a phased build-out programme that will start with the award of planning consent and run until 2020.

Step one will involve deployment a small-scale array of Atlantis’ AK1000 tidal energy devices, the first of which is about to begin testing at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney.
