Greece’s energy regulator announced the approval of wind and solar projects totalling 840MW, while pledging to streamline the consenting procedures for 40GW of projects mired in the country’s labyrinthine bureaucracy.

The Regulatory Authority for Energy says it is “doing everything possible” to open the floodgates to new projects.

Prime Minister George Papandreou has repeatedly highlighted Greece’s tiny renewables sector in recent months, touting the country’s natural resources as one of its best hopes for economic redemption.
