David Green, CEO of Isle of Wight-based Ecoisland Energy, was found at his home on the island off southern England. His death is not being treated as suspicious.
Green had been questioned by police investigating claims that £115,000 ($183,000) of government cash was unaccounted for following the liquidation of the Ecoisland community interest company.
The 52-year-old led a high-profile two-year campaign for the Ecoisland project, which aimed to see the Isle of Wight become energy independent by 2020 through a combination of solar, small wind, geothermal, tidal and waste-to-energy sources.
