Announcing half-year results, RWE said it would take 3.1GW of generation capacity offline in Germany and the Netherlands as – like fellow utility E.ON yesterday – it updated investors on the pressures on its profitability.

“Due to the continuing boom in solar energy, many power stations throughout the sector and across Europe are no longer profitable to operate,” said RWE. More power plants are being analysed and could also be mothballed if this is deemed necessary, it added.
