Miguel Arias Cañete, the former Spanish environment minister, proved to be the most controversial nominee among the candidates put forward by European Commission president-elect Juncker.
Socialist Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are seeking to delay or reject Cañete’s approval, threatening to disrupt a timetable under which the new commission is suppose to be approved en bloc on 22 October and to take office on 1 November.
