The contract with Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission is for the 160km Caithness-Moray HVDC link - the largest investment in the region's electricity network since the hydro development era of the 1950s.

The link, expected to be switched on in 2018, will clear the way for electricity transmission to two million residents in the north of Scotland.

"This major transmission project will enable integration of a significant amount of renewable energy into the grid and supply clean, emission-free electricity to millions of people," says ABB Power Systems head Claudio Facchin.
