The fully automated 6MW/10MWh Smarter NetworkStorage (SNS) battery technology scheme, being developed at a substation inLeighton Buzzard, northwest of London, is expected to save over £6m onconventional network reinforcement methods.

Providing frequency regulation as well asload shifting, the project is designed to stabilise the grid more effectivelythan traditional thermal generators, and boost capacity to tie-in morerenewable energy production.

“The major grid challenges from the UK’sdecarbonisation can be met through energy storage’s inherent ability toreinforce the network.
