The top of Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) and her Bavarian ally, the Christian Social Union (CSU), today met in a third preliminary meeting with SPD leaders, after similar initial talks between the CDU/CSU and the Greens this week failed.
Merkel needs one of the opposition parties to form a new government after she won a landslide victory in September's elections, but lost her former coalition partner, the Free Democrats (FDP), who didn’t garner enough votes to gain any representation in Germany’s next parliament.
