Bavaria – thecountry’s biggest state and its second-most populous with 12 millioninhabitants – is also relatively sunny by German standards.

Thousands of roof-top PVpanels are installed on its farms, while ground-mounted solar arrays are seenacross the state.

Bavaria had 9.6GW ininstalled solar capacity by the end of last year, according to Germany's solar industryfederation, BSW Solar.

All renewablescombined accounted for 34% of the state’s output in 2012, with a highshare for hydro-power – but still very little wind.
