The funds will enable SunPower to research PV energy storage for large commercial applications.
California-based SunPower will partner with three energy-storage companies - Ice Energy, Xtreme Power and ZBB Energy - to establish a pilot programme for the research.
CPUC allocated the grant as part of its California Solar Initiative, which aims to create 1.94GW of solar-produced electricity in the state by 2016.
