Under the decision, announced late in the afternoon, the 21 most expensive gas and diesel-fired plants – with a combined capacity of more than 2GW and a cost of R$600/MWh ($171/MWh) or more - are no longer needed as Brazil added 3GW of new capacity in the first six months of the year.

The decision was also made as reservoirs in the country's northern and southern regions are now 79% and 97% full respectively, while levels in other regions continued to rise.
