If the boom continues, it will lead to a huge demand for imported wood and, with that, will come higher prices and more deforestation.
There is already growing opposition in the developing world, as concerns are voiced about land being used to provide fuel rather than food. More than 100 new biomass power stations are planned and, while power companies say they can source fuel “sustainably”, the Global Forest Coalition talks of a huge expansion of wildlife and community-unfriendly “green desert” plantations being developed to feed the plants.
