Some 62% of Wales – or more than 1 million hectares – is permanent grassland, much of which has a high level of extractable sugar. One hectare of grassland could produce up to 4,500 litres of ethanol, according to government figures.

The three-year research project, which is being led by the recently formed Institute of Biological Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) at Aberystwyth University, will examine the best methods of extracting and fermenting the sugar, and of maximising yields and rates of ethanol production.
