The move is part of a growing trend in the large US paper and pulp industry toward substitution of dirty fossil fuels with sustainable cleaner-burning biomass.
Graphic Packaging will start work immediately on the project, which it expects to complete by mid-2013. It will include a high-efficiency biomass boiler and a 40MW turbine generator at the mill. The new biomass system will make it self-sufficient from an electrical power and steam generation standpoint, and a net producer of electricity for about 27,400 homes in the area.
