The first Biomass Crop Assistance Program (BCAP) project area comprises 39 counties in Kansas and Missouri, and could allow the planting of more than 20,000 hectares.
Regional producers will sow a mix of perennial native plants such as switchgrass for the production of biomass pellet fuels and other bio-products to be used for power and heat generation.
The project is a joint effort between the US Agriculture Department (USDA) and agricultural producers in the Show Me Energy Cooperative.
