Since taking office, President Barack Obama has issued several directives that require the armed forces and Coast Guard to become more energy efficient and reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.
The military’s fuel consumption averages about 365,000 barrels of oil a day, making the Pentagon the single largest user of oil in the US.
The Army has been installing solar panels on roofs of barracks, the Air Force is testing renewable jet fuel and the Navy is also experimenting with biofuels for diesel ship engines.
