The US is the world leader, with nearly 16.5% of global installed capacity, followed by Germany and India, with 9.4% and 4.3% respectively.

"The recent events in Japan show in a dramatic way that renewables are the only sustainable alternative for mankind," says Martin Faulstich, chairman of the German Advisory Council on the Environment. "Biomass can serve as a substitute for nearly all types of energy.

"The
