By late 2009, the facility is expected to reach full-scale commercial production of 3,000 gallons of algal oil an acre by late this year, according to Rich Schoonover, chief operating officer at Solix.
The company, based in Fort Collins, Colorado, projects annual yields to increase to between 5,000 and 8,000 gallons with refinements after five years of production.
“We are ready to prove to the world the viability of algae as an alternative to petroleum-based fuels," he says.
