The Itarumã refinery in the state of Goiás, Energética do Cerrado Açucar e Álcool, has also been placed on a "dirty list," which subjects the company to credit restrictions at government and private banks. Credit restrictions in Brazil resulting from the world financial crisis have led several refineries to seek out bankruptcy protection in the past few months.
The refinery is part of a joint venture announced in July with Itarumã Participações, Petrobras and Mitsui to produce ethanol for export to Japan, North America and Europe.
