The study, by Edinburgh-based consultancy Ecometrica, compared the indirect greenhouse gas impact of deriving biofuels from four materials that are considered wastes or by-products, rather than more controversial biofuels derived from energy crops such as soya or palm.
Under the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive, which member states must begin to implement this year, ‘good’ biofuels will be given twice the weight of energy crop biofuels towards meeting countries’ renewables targets.
