Biodiesel is up to 40% more costly than regular diesel, and can be sold only at auction. State-controlled oil company Petrobras is in effect the only buyer, because auction rules stipulate that buyers must have a minimum 3% market share. Petrobras' third biodiesel refinery is scheduled to go online this month.
Rise in biodiesel-blending level on the cards
Brazil is considering raising its minimum biodiesel blending requirement from 3% to 4% this year.
