Scientists have until now been unable to synthesize long-chain alcohols containing more than five carbon atoms. But a research team at the University of California -- Los Angeles (UCLA) has now found a way to use genetically modified E. coli to produce chains of up to eight carbon atoms.
Packing more carbon atoms into an alcohol chain creates biofuel that contains more energy and is less corrosive to engines.
