Starting on 15 August, OPPD will replace up to 5% of the coal burned in one of the boilers at its North Omaha Station in Nebraska, with what Next Step calls PowerPellets. The plant uses 2.2 million tonnes of coal a year.

OPPD spokesman Jeff Hanson tells Recharge that the utility will be watching to see if the pellets cause any operational problems such as slag build-up on the boiler heat-exchange surface, or boost emissions of nitrous oxide and other pollutants above regulated federal and state limits.
