The CHP system is designed to be used onsite at public, commercial or industrial institutions, but Nexterra says the system could also serve as stand-alone power for independent producers or electricity utilities. Over the next two years, Vancouver-based Nexterra and its partner General Electric will test and demonstrate the new power application in two phases, at a cost of about $30m.

Nexterra Energy aims to commercialise its new biomass gasification technology to generate power and heat from small-scale plants by direct-firing synthetic gas into high-efficiency engines.
