The proposed plant will convert waste material such as garbage and grass clippings into synthetic gas. Energy generated will power up to 40 homes with water vapor as the only byproduct, according to base officials, who developed the project with Stevens Institute of Technology.
US congressmen Rob Andrews and John Adler, both Democrats, said the project could generate 350 new jobs within a few years.
