The Tyne power plant will be built alongside the River Tyne in the city of North Shields, 10km outside Newcastle. The two projects, which will each rank among the largest biomass plants in the world, are expected to cost a combined £1bn ($1.7bn), and will produce enough electricity to power 1.2 million homes in the region.
Both plants will be finished by 2014, and will create 1,750 jobs in the area during the construction phase.
