Boeing has been conducting additional tests with Virgin Atlantic, Continental Airlines, Japan Airlines and GE Aircraft Engines, using biofuel feedstocks including babassu, coconut oil, algae and camelina. Billy Glover, head of environmental strategy for Boeing, says the problem is not with biofuel's performance, but how quickly growers and refiners can make enough of it available to serve the aviation industry.
Jatropha jet fuel reduces emissions
A 50/50 jatropha biofuel blend saved more than 1.4 tonnes of jet fuel during a 12-hour test flight and offered performance improvements over Jet A1 fuel alone, says Air New Zealand.
