Biomass and biogas electricity and heat generation have skyrocketed in Germany since the 2000 Renewable Energy Sources Act created strong political conditions to drive markets.
EU requirements also mandate that 10.9% of the country’s energy supply come from bioenergy by 2020. That minimum is close to being met; as a result, feedstock is running low and is becoming more expensive.
Primary feedstocks for the German biomass industry come from forestry, industrial residues and wood waste.
